Most of us have celebrated more Thanksgivings than we are willing to admit to…but our bet is that there are still a few things we don’t know about this true American holiday! So, here is a list of 10 things You Don’t Know About Thanksgiving:
Number 10: Only 5% of Americans don’t eat Turkey on Thanksgiving
Number 9: The only interruption of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade occurred between 1942-1944 because of World War II
Number 8: There were no pumpkin pies at the first Thanksgiving
Number 7: FDR tried, and failed, to move Thanksgiving Day forward a week.
Number 6: Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey to become the National Bird of the USA
Number 5: The average American consumes 4,500 calories on Thanksgiving Day
Number 4: 20% of all Cranberries eaten each year in the USA are eaten on Thanksgiving Day
Number 3: Fossil evidence shows that turkeys roamed North American as early as 10 million years ago…a few years before our first Thanksgiving
Number 2: Thanksgiving has even been celebrated in space- US Astronauts had a traditional Thanksgiving meal, though freeze-dried
Number 1: The two turkeys pardoned by the President each year live out their days peacefully at Disneyland

Part of the reason that Swanson started creating T.V. Dinners in 1953 was because they needed to find something to do with 260 tons of frozen turkeys that were left over from Thanksgiving. Talk about a lot of Turkey dinners!
Think you have it rough imagine feeding 140 people for 3 days!The first thanksgiving was comprised of the surviving 50 Pilgrims and 90 Wampanoag Indians. This was definitely an endeavor because there were only 5 surviving women. Just imagine the amount of food that would involve and cooking trying to keep that many men well-fed for three straight days.

Turkeys are able to adapt to a wide variety of habitats. However, most turkeys are found in hardwood forests with grassy areas.
The best time to see a turkey is on a warm clear day or in a light rain.
Turkeys have heart attacks. When the Air Force was conducting test runs and breaking the sound barrier, fields of turkeys would drop dead.
Turkeys can drown if they look up when it is raining.
Eat, sleep, gobble
Turkeys spend the night in trees. They fly to their roosts around sunset.
Turkeys fly to the ground at first light and feed until mid-morning. Feeding resumes in mid-afternoon.
Gobbling starts before sunrise and can continue through most of the morning.
Eyes in the backs of their heads?
A wild turkey has excellent vision and hearing. Their field of vision is about 270 degrees. This is the main reason they continue to elude some hunters.
And they’re fast, too!
A spooked turkey can run at speeds up to 20 miles per hour. They can also burst into flight approaching speeds between 50-55 mph in a matter of seconds.
